Club Scrap Greetings To Go - Sunflowers Collection

So glad to be back blogging again. This month I had the great pleasure of being the Club Scrap Greetings to Go guest artist as shown on the Club Scrap Blog. Even after making all those cards I still wanted to make more with the beautiful Club Scrap Sunflower Collection. Here I've posted another set of cards I made to showcase some of the techniques I used.

The seed pack card is based on the Club Scrap August Card Sketch has an added slide out greeting panel in addition to the seed packet.

August Card Sketch Challenge from the Club Scrap Forum 

The card sketch challenge can be entered in the Club Scrap Forum and you'll have chance of winning a gift certificate.

Base - 3-3/4 inch x 11 inch print scored at 2-3/4 on each short side

Make the pocket base as shown above.  Where the base sides meet tear the edge, leaving 3/4 inch un-torn on the left.  Curl the edge with a pencil to make the opening. Ink edges if desired.

Inside pullout from a 5-3/8 inch x 4-1/4 inch panel.

Make a tab using an envelope punch board or other desired method and trim off excess.  Cut slits on each short side 1/2 inch from the bottom, 1/2 inch wide x 2-1/2 inch long.

Install pocket closer and tabs to hold pull out.

The pocket is made by using a 3/4 inch x 5-1/2 inch strip scored in half. Cover the inside edge with washi tape to ease sliding the pull out. Small 1/2 inch tabs hold the end so the pull out cannot be removed. Decorate as desired.

Use a small scrap to attach the bottom and top covers of the pocket.

This shows the card ready to place the top piece over the pull out.

For an easier pull out just leave off the slots and tabs.

For this card I scored the light green base (11 inch by 4-1/4 inch) short sides at 2 inch on one side and 3-1/2 inch on the other.  Then I scored the green base (8-1/2 inch by 5-1/2 inch) short sides at 1-3/4 inch on one side and 2-1/2 inch on the other.  To make sure you have place for each panel fold the card and place panels before attaching the two base pieces together. To the embossed panels I added Inktense watercolor pencil to the flower for this card.

The background was made using distress ink in progressive colors and a torn sheet of paper.

Shimmer Watercolor Card

This is a new card using Lindy's Stamp Gang magicals to watercolor the image. These are similar to Color Bursts, but they have extra shimmer. This gave a wonderful shine to the watercolors.

Double Stamped Card

This card shows the double stamping technique that gives a muted shadow to the image. I used a MISTI for stamp positioning, but any type of positioning tool will work.

Bonus "Mistake" Card

Here is what I thought was a mistake. After double stamping on the light green I found it too light for the white stamping to show. To see what would happen I clear embossed the large sunflower and then sprayed the panel with LSG Starbursts in Mission Bells Brown and Clam Bake Beige.  It was a surprise how the white ink resisted the spray and how yellow the flower looked against the brown. 

It turns out this card is perfect for the Club Scrap August Technique Challenge:  vintage/sepia coloring with embossed images. If you go to the Challenge post Linky section you can vote for your favorite. If I'm luck that might even be this card. 

As a bonus here is how I used multi-color gilding leaf to make the greeting. First I stamped and heated the sticky heat embossing powder until it looked shiny. This goes faster than regular clear embossing, but it all needs to be "wet" for the technique to work.

Scrub with a Gentle Sponge Scrubber to Clean off Excess.

The Blues Mixed Card

Every month Club Scrap has several challenges on their forum.  This month's technique challenge is to use a mixed media technique for a project.  The Club Scrap blog post has several techniques to choose from listed.  Above is my entry where I used a gesso over the embossed sentiment as described here and another gesso technique to create texture. 

Next, I used the gesso technique here to make the textured panel and the bird.  Instead of inking the gesso texture as listed in that post, I sprinkled an assortment of embossing powered on the wet gesso and heat set.  Then any empty spots on my paper were colored with a spray. My finished panels are shown bellow along with a close up of the texture created shown above.

Playing with Scraps - CS September Card Sketch

Today I'm working on the Club Scrap (CS) September Card Sketch challenge from the CS forums.   I love starting a card from a sketch to focus my ideas. Below is the sketch by Marya. for more information on the challenge see the CS forum.  

This time I decided to raid my scraps.  I keep scraps of any technique or art media for when I need a special detail.  Today I decided to work from papers I had out for a twinchie swap (a 2 x 2 inch art panel).  I next picked all the art scraps that went with papers in violet and spring green from the CS Wildflower kit (CS Retreat 2013, I think).   When I was finished I had enough stuff for two cards.

I started with the large violet panel using a new embossing folder and Lindy's Stamp Gang Sprays.  I just love the nest detail and the touching quote inside from the CS Take Wing Collection.  The fun part was making a nest.

LOL, I did not realize that I used so much stuff, but this is my style of "art jounaling." I had a lot of fun working on these cards and I hope you'll give this sketch a try.  

Listen Canvas for Lindy's Stamp Gang June Challenge

I've have recently discovered Lindy's Stamp Gang (LSG) products and I love them.  They have shimmery, two tone sprays in non-clog bottles, two tone embossing powers, and magical powder paints.  So I used my new stash of LSG products to make a canvas for the June 2014 LSG color challenge.  For more information on the LSG challenge go Here.

The background canvas is covered with book text & matte medium.  Then colored with LSG Starburst Spray.  The main background was made with embossing paste and stencils.  Then it was colored several colors of LSG Starburst sprays.  In a few locations I added some LSG embossing powers to add a bit more texture.  The clouds are vellum with highlights is LSG embossing power.  I adhered the vellum to the canvas with embossing paste making the white part of the cloud.  The lighter grass and leaves were colored Magical mica powder.  The flowers were colored with LSG Starburst Spray. "Listen" was stamped on a scrap from Gelli printing.  The boarder was stamped randomly with a sheet music stamp in amethyst hybrid ink.  Selected areas were distressed with Distress Ink Brushed Corduroy & Pitt big brush pen Walnut Brown.  

I painted gesso on leftover Tim Holtz Laboratory paper that I then colored them with LSG Starburst sprays.  The bird and branch is a Sizzix alternations die; the flowers are from a Stampin Up punch.  I used two die cuts of the bird and branch. I made a recessed location for the bottom layer by using a scrap paper die cut when applying embossing paste.  On the top layer I included Glossy Accents over the bird's body.  The flowers have brass mini-brad centers.  The small leaves were creative use of extra paper towels used to catch over spray.  They were so richly colored that I just had to use them.

Doorway Journal Cover - Tim’s Compendium III Challenge #5

So here is my 5th Tim Holtz Compendium of Curiosities Volume III challenge entry. The challenge is hosted by L3 Studios, learn more about the "CC3C" challenge here. Thankful for the Rain - Tim’s Compendium III Challenge #4

So here is my 4th Tim Holtz Compendium of Curiosities Volume III challenge. The challenge is hosted by L3 Studios, learn more about the "CC3C" challenge here. I love the way the inks absorbed and flowed around the embossing paste.

 

My project for this time started with a Prima Paper Doll Stamp and my new Peerless watercolor paints used to color in the stamp.  After that I spent a long time looking at the page before I came up with a design to frame her.  I wanted to use flowers, so after finding the quote, "Give Thanks for the rain in your life, which waters the flowers of your soul - Jonathan Lockwood Huie," I went for the grey rainy background.

“Be” Note Board for Tim’s Compendium III Challenge #3

I recently went to a scrapbook retreat with 15 of my craftiest girlfriends.  This was the perfect time to try out a new technique, better yet a Tim Holtz technique.  So here is my 3^rd Tim Holtz Compendium of Curiosities Volume III challenge.  The challenge is hosted by L3 Studios, learn more about the "CC3C" challenge here. The organizer, Rebeca, generously gave us each a plain white IKEA wet erase memo board to decorate. Trees Candles

I have one last Club Scrap Trees project to share today.  The Club Scrap Forum has lots of support, inspiration, chat, and challenges. The impromptu challenge for this month is tissue paper.  It reminded me of some candles I've made using stamped tissue paper from a Splitcoast Stampers tutorial. Here are my candle decorated using Trees stamps with CS hybrid ink and Trees fibers and leaf embellishments.
